OUR STORY
Responding When It Mattered Most
The Pantry WA began during a season of growing need. What started as a food charity operating out of a local church soon found itself overwhelmed as demand increased and facilities were stretched beyond capacity. When it became clear the church building could no longer support the operation, the future of the charity was uncertain — yet more than 60,000 people each year depended on it. Closing the doors was not an option.
Feeling compelled to carry the vision forward, Bev Woolhouse stepped out in faith to take The Pantry beyond the church walls and lead it into its next chapter. With a deep conviction that the work could not end, she began laying foundations for an independent future, despite not knowing exactly how it would unfold. When a suitable building was located Bev envisioned a dual function for the space; The Pantry fitted out with a sizeable cool-room, storage and packing space along with accessibility for the hamper recipients as well as a cafe running out of the space to share running costs and support the mission of the Pantry. Dee's Cafe has now become a Wangara hot spot. What began as a bold step of faith soon became the foundation of The Pantry WA Ltd.
A Unique Approach
Today, The Pantry WA provides food hampers for individuals and families doing it tough across the Northern suburbs of Perth. With the rising cost of living, the need continues to grow, as more people are forced to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table. The Pantry understands that asking for help can be difficult, so the hamper collection process has been designed with dignity and simplicity in mind — recipients simply drive up, open their boot, and volunteers carefully place the hamper inside.
Powered by Generosity
Food is generously donated through partners such as OzHarvest and SecondBite. A $10 contribution is suggested to help cover rent and operating costs, though this is completely voluntary, recognising that even this amount can be a challenge for those already under financial pressure. What has been deeply moving is the generosity shown within the community itself — many people choose to contribute, often paying it forward for the person behind them. On some days, this kindness creates a beautiful domino effect of generosity.
If our story to this point strikes a chord in you there a plenty of way you can be a part of our next chapter. From making a food donation to volunteering or giving financially, if you'd like to be involved in some way we'd love to hear from you!
