A Hidden Crisis in Our Community

Hunger doesn’t always look the way we expect. In Perth, one in six people experience food insecurity — not out on the streets, but in homes just like yours. People doing their best to get by, sending their kids to school, going to work, studying, or caring for ageing parents. Sometimes, it only takes one unexpected crisis — a job loss, illness, injury, or rising bills — to turn a household from coping to struggling.

The face of hunger is diverse. It’s men and women, young and old, singles and families. Students, retirees, employed and unemployed a like, we often hear people saying “I never thought I would have to line up for food.”

It Can Be Hard to Ask for Help

Shame and embarrassment stop many people from seeking assistance. Research shows that people often believe someone else is in more need than them, or feel humiliated at the thought of asking. But food insecurity isn’t about laziness or choice — it’s a hidden struggle that can touch anyone at any time.

At least once a week, three in ten food-insecure Australians go a whole day without eating. Women are more likely to experience food insecurity and feel the impacts more deeply. Hunger is about more than missing a meal, it can effect a persons sense of worth and value — so we strive to give not only food but also dignity, safety, and letting people know that we see them.

Making Help Simple — Our Drive-Through Service

At The Pantry WA, we believe help should be easy to accept. That’s why we created our drive-through food hamper service. It’s simple, discreet, and respectful — a little like click-and-collect.

Recipients drive up, open their boot, and our volunteers carefully place the hamper inside. No long lines. No waiting rooms. No embarrassment. Just a safe, private way to get help when it’s needed most. For many, this small act of dignity is hugely impacting — it makes asking for help less intimidating, and allows people to accept support with confidence.

Meeting the Need, One Hamper at a Time

Because of generous people who believe in the power of food, grace, and hope, The Pantry WA continues to feed more than 60,000 people every year. This impact is only possible through the kindness of donors, volunteers, and community partners who stand with us and believe that no one should face hunger alone. In a time of growing need, their generosity keeps our doors open and our hampers full — offering not just food, but dignity, compassion, and hope for the future.
